How Estonian Supporters are Changing the Future of Ethiopia

ESTONIAN HEART IN ETHIOPIA (blog series)

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” Nelson Mandela once said. On the Etioopia.ee blog, we see this change with our own eyes every day.

We began our journey in 2010 with one clear goal: to offer the poorest children in Ethiopia the opportunity to acquire an education in a private school, where classes are smaller and each child receives more attention. Today, more than ten years later, we have reason to celebrate a result that initially seemed like an unreachable dream.

A Major Victory in 2023

This year was a landmark for our project. Out of 15 students who graduated, as many as 7 started university studies. This is not just a statistic. It represents the lives of seven young people that have been permanently changed. Most of these children’s parents are illiterate, but they know that education is the only path out of deep poverty.

“Breaking out of poverty is the primary fuel for these children. They do not study out of obligation, but out of a hunger for a better future.”

In Ethiopia, continuing education after primary school is often a luxury that few can afford. The fact that half of the students we supported have reached higher education shows that your contribution has created a strong foundation. These young people are not just changing their own lives—they are becoming specialists who will develop their country and community.

In the upcoming posts, we will introduce these young talents to you more closely—their dreams and the journey that has taken them from a mud hut to a university lecture hall.
