Abebayehu – The Boy Who Beat the Odds

When we began in 2010, we couldn’t have dreamed of moments like this. Abebayehu

Endale Gethane’s story is living proof of what happens when a child’s potential meets

opportunity.

Today, Abebayehu is a Computer Science student at the American University of Ras Al

Khaimah. However, his journey didn’t begin in luxurious classrooms, but in the small

Ethiopian town of Soddo, where he graduated from Chora School with top honors.

His achievements are nothing short of remarkable:

Three consecutive years on the President’s List: The university’s highest

academic honor, reserved only for the best of the best.

Recognition from the Prime Minister: In 2023, he received an award for

outstanding academic performance from the Prime Minister of Ethiopia

himself.

An AI Pioneer: He isn’t just learning to code; he is already working with

Large Language Models (LLMs) and Artificial Intelligence, having completed

a successful internship at an innovation hub.

Abebayehu has not forgotten his roots. Despite his rigorous studies, he serves as a

volunteer academic coordinator for the NGO Damota, mentoring other Ethiopian youth in

their studies. He is the bridge helping the next generation reach the same heights he has

achieved.

“Abebayehu specializes in backend development and AI. The boy who started his journey

with the help of Estonian supporters is today building systems that optimize data and

digitize business processes.”

Abebayehu’s story shows that motivation born out of hardship is more powerful than any

obstacle. He is a perfect example of how education is an investment that pays off a

thousandfold—not just for one child, but for an entire society.

We thank all our supporters who have believed in the potential of Ethiopian

children.
