Mebratu- Writing His Own Future

Sometimes we are asked if it’s truly possible to see the real impact of aid sent all the way to

Ethiopia.

Some students have journeys full of major twists and turns, and then there are students like

Mebratu. His story is rare in its stability: from 2nd grade to his medical studies today, his

performance has never wavered. He is a quiet force who has made the absolute most of the

opportunity he was given.

In our archives, we have a photo of Mebratu as a 2nd grader—serious and focused. Today, 15

years later, we see that same look, but now in the white coat of a medical student.

A promise from 11th grade: We have a video where he clearly states his dream of becoming a

doctor.”

“Mebratu’s incredible academic stability didn’t happen by chance. Behind him stands his mother,

who raised four sons on her own. In Ethiopia, this demands unimaginable physical and mental

resilience.

Mebratu is the family’s beacon of hope. Every time he opens a textbook, he does so knowing

exactly what his mother has sacrificed for her sons’ education. It is a silent pact: the mother

gives her all at home, and Mebratu gives his all in the classroom. The fact that he is a medical

student today is the ultimate tribute to his mother’s life’s work.
