Asimamawu studies geographica IT ( GIS ) at one of Ethiopia`s most prestigious universities, Haramaya University. This is a complex field of study that combines mapping from satellite data and spatial analysis. It is what is in his heart that makes his story a special one.
When we speak of education then we speak not only of earning a degree or a diploma but of developing strength of character. Since finishing high school Adisu has actively engaged in many volunteer programs.
Winter in Ethiopia is during our summer. It is a season of heavy rains and storms. For many families this means rebuilding their homes after the rains have subsided. The rain washes away the clay that is used in the building of the huts that they live in.The result is a dwelling that is impossible to live in not to mention the danger of the hut collapsing because the material that binds the structure is no longer there.
Asmamo is one of the students who spends his school vacation helping others rather than resting.
Thanks to his education and analytical skills his expertise in these building programs is in budgeting and managing the building process. He is in there with the builders, hands on,working on rebuilding these structures for the poorest families affected during this annual calamity.
One may think that someone who has worked so hard trying to escape poverty by earning an education would tend to try to forget about the grind of being poor and move on with their lives.
Asimamawu as well as other students that we have helped express a very, very deep gratitude, grateful for the fact that they may now help others. This is one of education’s most beautiful by-products, realizing that one possesses the know-how and strength to help others.
In addition to helping with these building projects, Asmamo also volunteers as the program coordinator in the student lunch program sponsored by MTÜ Damota. He directs other volunteers to ensure that the students have a secure and supportive environment.
It is quite incredible that a boy who once relied on the same program so that he would not starve now leads the group of volunteers that keep this program alive. Now a young man, Asmamo is responsible for the next generation of students who rely on this program to stay healthy and not go hungry while keeping up their grades.
This story is but one example of the true gift that an education gives, all thanks to the many Estonian sponsors who have supported the goals of MTÜ Damota over the years.
There is a 30 second clip in our archives of Asimamawu while in the 11th grade.
Even then he spoke of eventually becoming a university professor with the aim of bettering society in Ethiopia through technological advancements.Asimamawu is well aware of the fact that his education is not only for himself. He claims “societal development” as one of his hobbies ! How many students do you know that have such focus ?
He speaks 3 languages ; English,Amhara,Wolaita. Speaking Wolaita helps him communicate with families in Soddo who do not speak Amhara.
